The Nature of Change

Change and life transitions are a normal part of life. Sometimes they are initiated by you and other times the change comes and you have to learn to adapt to the transition. Life transitions can be from career changes, relationships changes, relocation changes or other major life events. These can stir up a range of emotions from excitement to anxiety.

The Impact of Life Transitions

Change can create an opportunity for growth. Although it may not feel like it at the time, change can be a period of learning and personal development for you. In addition, transitions can impact your mental and emotional well-being because of the fear of the unknown and instability that change brings. This can bring up emotions like stress, worry and anxiety. If you don’t know how to cope with these emotions, these life transitions can become even more difficult. At the same time, focusing on the “negatives” of change can further reinforce the anxiety but choosing to focus on the “positives” can help mitigate feelings of anxiety.

Coping Strategies for Change

Even during periods of transition, it is important to continue to engage in you daily activities that provide you comfort as a way to have some consistency in your life. Other ways to cope with change is to practice self-care, mindfulness and even seek professional support, if needed. In addition, keeping in contact with your support system, such as family and friends can aide you during this time of transition.

Finding meaning and purpose

Sometimes during periods of change, it may be a good idea for you to examine the direction of your life. Asking yourself, what are your goals, values and aspirations and whether you have been living towards reaching them are questions that can help you become more intentional with how you’re living your life. Life transitions can mean a time of re-evaluation and identifying opportunities to grow, change direction and learn. Change can also offer an opportunity to develop problem solving skills, resiliency and adaptability.

Embrace Life Transitions

The journey of life is full of transition and change. When life transitions happen, having a willingness to learn and grow mindset can make the transition easier. Although things may be difficult, it does offer an opportunity for metamorphosis. This can be your time for personal transformation and renewal. Approach this journey of transition with curiosity and embrace the chance to learn and grow.
